Wingfoiling, with its links to the Strait of Gibraltar, has made its mark at the Spanish Wingfoil Racing Cup, held from 16 to 18 October in Torrevieja. Martín Medina Rein, from Real Club El Candado and affiliated with Sportlink Tarifa, put in an outstanding performance, finishing fourth in the overall standings and first in the men’s Under-17 category. The competition also saw Leo Zabell take the runners-up spot in the overall standings and victory in the men’s Under-19 category, whilst Ángel Granda was crowned overall champion.

Martín Medina, among the best in the Spanish Cup

Martín Medina was one of the standout performers in the competition held off the coast of Torrevieja. The young rider completed the three heats with placings of fifth, seventh and fifth, earning him 17 points and securing fourth place overall amongst the 31 registered competitors.

His result saw him finish top of the Under-17 men’s category and third in the overall men’s standings, confirming his ability to compete against athletes in higher categories.

Medina finished level on points with Neus Pericàs, third in the overall standings and the women’s winner, in a particularly tight race at the top of the table.

Leo Zabell, Under-19 winner and overall runner-up

The Andalusian contingent also had one of its standout performers in Leo Zabell Blanco. The rider from the Andalusian Sailing Federation finished second overall with 13 points, just two behind the competition winner, Ángel Granda, of the Real Club Náutico de Gran Canaria.

Zabell secured two second-place finishes in the three races contested and also took first place in the men’s Under-19 category.

The overall victory went to Ángel Granda, who scored 11 points after winning the first two races. The overall podium was completed by Neus Pericàs, from the Real Club Náutico Port de Pollença, with 17 points.

Ángel Medina and Joaquín Montans round off the notable line-up

Among the participants was also Ángel Medina Rodríguez, from the Real Club El Candado, registered under the name OZU Tarifa. The rider competed in the Senior category and is ranked twelfth in the official overall standings.

For his part, Joaquín Montans Quirce, from the Andalusian Sailing Federation, rounded off the strong Andalusian showing in the top positions with an overall fifth place and 20 points, also finishing fourth in the men’s classification.

As a result, three Andalusian athletes – Leo Zabell, Martín Medina and Joaquín Montans – managed to finish in the top five of the overall standings.

Weather conditions forced the entire competition into a single day

The Spanish Wingfoil Racing Cup was marked by challenging weather conditions. Rain and showers prevented races from taking place on Friday and Saturday, forcing all sporting activity to be concentrated on Sunday 18 October.

Three races were eventually completed in a north-easterly wind of approximately nine knots, with the wind direction varying between 050 and 060 degrees.

Consistency proved decisive in a competition with no scope for making up ground on subsequent days.
