The lack of wind and the currents are complicating the 2nd Ubago Cup between La Línea and Sotogrande

The 2nd Ubago Cup brought together around 80 sailors from Spain, Gibraltar and Ceuta for a race of some 35 miles between La Línea and Sotogrande, characterised by a lack of wind, strong currents and several withdrawals.

The Real Club Náutico de La Línea de la Concepción hosted the second edition of this inshore regatta on Saturday, on a day that proved particularly challenging for the crews due to the sailing conditions.

The race started near Poniente Beach, passing through the Sotogrande Marina before heading back towards La Línea.

Calms and currents make sailing difficult

The wind was slow to pick up and the crews had to contend with long periods of calm, high temperatures and the strong currents in the area. These conditions demanded patience and strategy, led to several withdrawals and extended the sailing time to around seven hours for the boats that completed the course.

In the fully crewed ORC category, José Luis Pérez Navarro’s Altarik IV secured victory. Agustín de Villar’s Senador II also stood out for its performance in particularly difficult conditions.

In the Reduced category, the Aqua 44, skippered by Francisco López, took centre stage by reaching Sotogrande in first place in its class, overcoming the difficulties posed by the currents and the lack of wind.
